Navigating the social media landscape

Blogging is a great way to connect with your costumers, gain new potential customers, keep up on industry trends and establish industry expertise. At first, it may seem like a challenging effort based on your already limited time, but there are numerous strategic benefits in having a business blog.

Before jumping in, make sure you have a plan. What is the purpose of the blog? What content is going to be shared? Who is going to manage the blog? And how does it fit in if you already utilize other social media channels, such as Facebook or Twitter?

Here are some more benefits of blogging, tips for maintaining a blog and how to utilize Facebook and Twitter to promote your blog:

Benefits of Blogging:

Create a Voice for your Business: A website is great for showcasing your products and services, but a blog can showcase your expertise, style and knowledge. This creates a face and voice for the business and it allows customers to feel more connected and familiar with your company.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): When done right, blogging can improve your search ranking through in-bound links and key-word optimization. The content you create on topics that are important to your customer appears in search results that introduce the audience to your company through the information being shared. Long Shelf Life: Your blog articles will have a longer shelf life than other social media posts. This means that they will continue to be found in searches (i.e. Google, Bing, etc.) for years. Facebook updates may only last for a few days.

Multiple Audiences: Blogs have the ability to reach multiple audiences through searches, RSS, email, site visitors, along with social media posts and social sharing. Twitter posts may only reach the people who follow your page and are online at that time.

Tips for Maintaining Your Blog:

Content Strategy: Creating a content strategy is important as it shapes your voice and approach to blogging. What is the overall goal for your blog? What type of content do you want to write about? Once you decide on a strategy, planning out the rest gets a little easier.

Create an Editorial Calendar: An editorial calendar will help maintain consistency, set the groundwork for the company’s blogging commitment, layout an overall timeline and keep track of topics and assignments. This will ensure that the blog doesn’t get pushed off the “to-do” list.

Interact: Interacting with other bloggers will help develop your reputation in the blogging world. Don’t be afraid to comment on other blogs, and don’t forget to respond to comments made on your blog. Being an asset to other bloggers and your potential customers is the best way to find blogging success.

How to Tie Facebook, Twitter and Blogging:

Content Hub: Think of the blog as being the content hub for readers. Facebook and Twitter posts are easy ways to distribute and promote that content. Do this by posting a new status update on Facebook and tweet on Twitter letting your fans and followers know that there is a new blog entry and include a link back to the blog.

“Like” and “Share”: Include other social media buttons on the blog, such as the “Share on Facebook” or “Like” buttons, so that others can easily share your content.
